Melksham railway station is unmanned station on the line from Chippenham to Trowbridge that was originally part of Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway, absorbed in 1850 by the Great Western Railway. The station first opened in 1847. It then was closed in 1966 under the Beeching Axe, but reopened in 1985 to provide a limited commuter service to Swindon, running mornings and evenings and in 2001, the services were increased to up to five trains each way daily Monday to Friday. In December 2006 server were cut to two services up and down each weekday. Melksham station is served by trains that are operated by First Great Western.

The Save the Train Group campaign for improvements to the services on the line. Which wants to have a train services running from Swindon in North of Wiltshire to Salisbury in South of Wiltshire and running onto Southampton via ChipPenham, Melksham & other Towns in Western Wiltshire. Melksham is on the banks of river Avon. The 2001 UK census cited Melksham as having 20,000 inhabitants, including sizeable environs such as Bowerhill and Berryfield. Melksham is Wiltshire's fifth-largest town by population after Swindon, Salisbury, Chippenham and Trowbridge
