A celebration dinner took place in the canal barge at the Lock Inn, Bradford on Avon on the evening of Friday 13th November 2009. The Guests of Honour were Dr Andrew Murrison MP, Shadow Defence Minister and Donald Jepson, the founder Chairman of WWRUG. Vice Chair of WWRUG, Roger Newman was the Master of Ceremonies. Donald Jepson travelled from North Wales to be present. The past chairmen of the group also attended together with members of the group who wished to celebrate totalling 23 persons, good for a totally inclement evening of stormy showers and strong winds suitable for Friday 13th!. Two of our attendees travelled up especially from Weymouth for the dinner, returning the same evening(Thanks Terry and Andy). Dr Andrew Murrison has been very supportive of our group chairing meetings with FGW executives and ourselves and following up with letters toDft etc. In his speech Dr Murrison said that FGW had improved a great deal and that his postbag on rail matters had diminished markedly showing progress had been made. He suggested that the next big issue for us all must be for the all-stopping Trans-Wilts rail link Swindon/Melksham/Salisbury to be established with regular services . Government viaDft were not willing to finance it at present despite the environmental desirability of rail travel but we must keep pressing for this service; Wiltshire Council had no money to support such a project. Donald Jepson recounted the early days of WWRUG and the reality of its approach to what was possible. This approach bore fruit with many more trains stopping at Bradford on Avon, expansion rather than loss of the Bristol/Waterloo service and the saving of Dilton Marsh Halt. Roger Newman thanked Bob lee and Rob Brown for organising the dinner which was very successful. Thanks are due to the Staff of the Lock Inn for their fantastic service and fine cuisine. Rob Brown had earlier organised a very enjoyable celebration walk which also marked our 20th Anniversary. The two events have well and truly marked the occasion and now we look forward to many more years of achievement.
